The 'worlds' I am in.

The name of my blog is Kay in the Digital World. I really mean I would like to rethink who I am and how I interact with the digital world. Through the five blog posts, I analyse my digital life in different aspects. And I have also tried to look at the phenomenon in the society.

The blog post I have chosen is an evaluation of my use of facebook. It is the communication technology taking most of the proportion of my communication time. And I believe it is also the case of many people. After the evaluation, I have obviously changes the way of using facebook. I think of it in a new way.

Before the evaluation, I thought it is a platform for me to communicate with my friends. Now, I think it is somewhere for me to keep all my connections. I do not feel strange to have been allowed to access others’ news. This is the affordances of the new technology that I’d better accept it. And, if the constraint of using facebook is that I have to learn how to protect my personal information better, I’d better learn it as fast as I can but not giving up facebook.

And the video in this post really shows that the use of social network website is not a personal choice anymore. How you use the network is greatly influenced by people around you. That is, the online world is also influencing the real world. And as we can see from the communication in the daily life,

the two ‘worlds’ are now inseparable.

MSN with the person sitting next to me

When I was working in Hong Kong Education Limited, most of the communication between the staff is done through technology. What kind of technology did we use?

1. We all sat in the same office but we phoned people in next team.

2. My supervisor was just sitting back to back with me within in 5 footsteps distance but she communicated with me through MSN. The information other than my name that she asked me on my first day of work is that what my msn is.

3. Another temporary assistant sat next to me. There was only a short and thin broad between us but we talked through msn and facebook.

The salary of a summer temporary assistant was not high, especially when the company is a non-profit one. After I have left the company and started my new school term, I became a freelancer of the company to help with some tagging job. They had a whole database of files needed to be tagged. I work on that for 2 weeks, spending one or two hours a day to tag the files at HOME. Then, I earn more than the salary of my two months summer job. The concern is not how much time I have spent on my work but what I have done.

I think the new communication technology, especially the internet, allows people to earn their living with fewer constraints on non-human factors. When people are working at home, they don’t need to worry about the traffic, the weather so on and so forth.

On the other hand, people working in virtual team should have strong sense of responsibility. When people are not working in an office and not being supervised, there are a lot more temptations. Colleagues need to trust each other even they are not working at the same time or place.

Here are the examples of good virtual team and bad virtual team:

After all, I think it is good to have the new communication technology. The world is globalising and people in different places have many chances to cooperate on projects. The new CT makes the communication easier, faster and steadier.
